The not good:
The car would not start, and after suspecting it was a faulty starter, we discovered the ring gear on the torque converter had come loose and was not engaging the starter (video available for those seriously interested). This apparently has happened to at least two other 993 owners on the forums also (see here and here). This means the engine has to be dropped.
I have sourced a replacement trans ready to be swapped in, rather than repair the old torque converter which may affect the rotational balance. This is included in the price.
Instead of putting in the time and labor to remove the engine, probably pour money into doing other work while in there, I’d rather sell the car as-is. It may also make more sense for someone with a G50 sitting around to convert the car and save a boatload of cash.
The ultimate downside is that because the car is an automatic, it cannot be bump started to show that it runs. If you’d like to arrange for a compression test, that is doable – I have 100% confidence that the results will be fine as I was driving the car prior to this debacle. I also have photos of much of the maintenance work being completed)
A widebody tiptronic 993 with 45k miles recently sold for $79k a few weeks ago…. I’m willing to sell the car as-is for $55k, *absolutely firm*
If you are interested, you can contact me and I will reach out. I have too many other financial priorities at the moment to dig into the car. I’ve had my fun and would like to extend what I think is a fair deal on a widebody 993 that needs a little TLC.
